The Kamchatka Peninsula is a long land mass, 1,250 km long and 270,000 km² in area, jutting out to the north-east of Russia and Asia. It is bordered by the Bering Sea to the east, the Sea of Okhotsk to the west and the Pacific Ocean respectively, and runs north-south through Eastern Siberia like Florida. As big as New Zealand, it is among the largest peninsulas in the world. Its shape is said to resemble a giant fish with its head turned southwards. It is also one of the least densely populated peninsulas in the world, with less than one person per square kilometre. The peninsula's isolated beauty and abundant wildlife offer the potential for long-term tourism development, especially for the environmentally conscious and adventurous traveller. Between the peninsula and the Bering Sea lies the 10,500m-deep Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. This trench is similar to, but not as deep as, the parallel trench along the southern coast of the Aleutian Islands. In the past, very strong earthquakes have shaken Kamchatka, but all of them had their epicentre in the Kuril-Kamchatka. In the central Kamchatka River and the valleys around it is a large volcanic belt that includes nearly 160 volcanoes, 29 of which are still active. The peninsula has a high concentration of volcanoes and accompanying volcanic phenomena, with 19 active volcanoes on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This cold climate and the rumbling, erupting volcanoes have earned the peninsula the nickname 'Land of Fire and Ice'. In Kamchatka, there is always a volcano somewhere, belching smoke. Large explosions sometimes occur, but due to the remoteness of the mountains and the small population, there is little human suffering.
